His story illustrates one of the worst effects of how the modern positioning of conservative politics formed around paranoid conspiracism. Where we used to have wise, compassionate, conservative perspectives, many are turning to fear and doubting the validity of expertise and democracy that they used to cherish. But he might also become a source of hope.
